The most trafficked mammal on Earth needs us<\/h2>

Meet the pangolin: a shy, gentle, night-loving animal that eats ants and termites, and wears armour made of overlapping scales. When it feels threatened it curls into a tight ball. Sadly, that clever defence does nothing against people with sacks and trucks.<\/p>

Pangolins are widely described as the most trafficked wild mammals in the world. They are taken from the wild in Africa and Asia for their meat and for their scales, which are made of keratin, the same material as your fingernails. Scales are used in some traditional remedies, but there is no proven medical benefit. Animals are suffering, and families like this one are being torn apart, for nothing.<\/p>

Why we should all care<\/h2>

There are eight species of pangolin, four in Africa and four in Asia, and several are classed as threatened with extinction. Since 2017 all eight have been listed in the strictest protection category under CITES, which bans international commercial trade. The law is there. What is still needed is people paying attention, because the trade only exists while there is demand and silence.<\/p>
